AI a 15-year period of significant upheaval

In his recent appearance on "The Diary of a CEO," Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer at Google X, delivered a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence. He painted a picture of a 15-year period of significant upheaval, which he refers to as a "dystopia," before a potential "utopia" emerges.

Here's a summary of the key points from his discussion:

  • AI as an imminent threat: Gawdat believes that the rapid advancement of AI poses an existential threat that is more significant than climate change or any other challenge humanity has faced. He argues that the world as we know it will be unrecognisable in just five years and that the changes are not a distant possibility but are happening right now.

  • Job displacement and economic collapse: A central theme of his warning is that AI will lead to a massive displacement of jobs. He predicts that by 2037, most jobs will be gone, which will fundamentally destroy the capitalist system as we know it. He raises the question of what society will do when no one works and how a system based on labour and consumption can survive.

  • The need for new leadership: Gawdat suggests that we should consider replacing world leaders with AI, as he believes that human leaders are often driven by selfish interests and are incapable of managing the complexities of the coming AI age.

  • AI's self-evolving nature: He highlighted the danger of AI's ability to self-evolve, stating that the AI monopoly and its self-improving systems are a major concern. He questioned whether the companies and individuals developing these technologies have society's best interests at heart.

  • The "fruit salad religion": To combat the division and chaos he foresees, Gawdat proposed a new "fruit salad religion" or belief system. This idea centers on finding common ground and shared humanity to unite people and prevent the manufactured conflicts that he believes are being used to manipulate societies.

  • A call to action: Gawdat's message is ultimately a call to prepare for this future. He urges people to become aware of the changes, understand the potential for chaos, and take practical steps to protect themselves. He emphasises that the first step to navigating this new world is awareness.
